Alexander Arthur Museum
Alexander Arthur Museum

Discover a fascinating yet lesser-known piece of American history at the Alexander Arthur Museum. This unique building was one of the first to be built in Middlesboro and currently houses the personal items of Alexander Arthur, the founder of Middlesboro. Explore the property with the help of a knowledgeable guide, who will share insights into the intriguing history of Middlesboro and the greater tri-state region of Cumberland Gap. While in downtown Middlesboro, stop and shop at the Emporium at 2120 or catch a show at The Bell Theater before stopping for a bite at the local go-to, Conley’s Drive-In.

Battle of Camp Wildcat Mountain
Battle of Camp Wildcat Mountain

If you’re a history buff, this stop is a can’t-miss. Stand on the site of the first Union victory in the battle for Kentucky, and one of the first Union victories in the Civil War, at Camp Wildcat Battle Monument. Due to the remote location of this battle site, you’ll get the chance to see real trenches preserved as a reminder of the battle that took place on an October day in 1861. The gravel county road up to Wildcat Mountain may not be passable under certain weather conditions, so be sure to call the London Ranger Station for information about road conditions. On your way back into town, stop in downtown London for a bit to eat at one of our local favorites, like The Abbey or Local Honey, for farm-fresh seasonal menus.

Clay County Historical Society
Clay County Historical Society

Learn about Kentucky’s fascinating pioneer history at the Clay County Historical Society’s Goose Creek Salt Works Pioneer Village. One of the most historic sites in southeast Kentucky, you can visit cabins nearly 200 years old before heading into town to tour The Clay We Were Museum. This unique collection of artifacts represents what life was like in Clay County over the centuries, including memorabilia that represents Appalachian living, early farming, coal mining, logging and lumber production, salt production, military memorabilia, and more. Once you’ve taken a trip back in time, stop by a current local favorite, Pat’s Snack Bar, for the best burgers in town—and maybe even catch some live music!

Hensley Settlement
Hensley Settlement

In the heart of Cumberland Gap National Historical Park, you’ll find a unique mountaintop settlement preserved for over a century. Once a small community of 100 people, this historic Appalachian settlement will take you back to simpler times. Join a park ranger to travel atop Brush Mountain, where you will get the chance to explore the fence-lined farm, historic springhouse, and one-room schoolhouse. To visit, you must make a reservation by noon the day before your tour date, so be sure to call the Cumberland Gap National Historical Park Visitor Center before planning your trip. On your way to Cumberland Gap, stop by The Table Coffee House in Middlesboro to grab a hearty breakfast and coffee to go.

Established in 1987, this museum boasts an extensive collection of Native American and pioneer artifacts, including memorabilia from the Daniel Boone Festival held annually in Barbourville, Kentucky, since 1948. Once you’ve made your way through the exhibits, visit Tommy’s Rootbeer Stand for another trip back in time. An ode to the classic rootbeer stands of the mid-1900s, you can enjoy a delicious rootbeer float alongside a number of other diner favorites.
